Drug Uses
Zovirax is used for treatment of herpes infections of the skin, lip, and genitals, herpes zoster (shingles), and chickenpox. It does not cure herpes infections but relieves pain and itching and encourages healing. Topical Zovirax does not put a stop to the reappearance of sores but may reduce pain and itching if applied when the earliest symptoms first appear. Oral Zovirax decreases the frequency and severity of recurrent sores, however it is used only by people with severe herpes infections because of possible unpleasant effects. This medication may be prescribed for other uses, ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How Taken
Zovirax topical is generally applied six times a day with 3 hour intervals between the doses, for a week. Start the treatment as soon as you notice the first signs (e.g. tingling, burning, and blisters). Enough cream should be applied to cover the lesion(s) completely. A one half inch ribbon of cream covers about 4 square inches of surface area. To avoid spreading the virus to other body parts and to other people it is best to use an applicator (e.g. cotton swab) when applying Zovirax. You can also wear a glove or finger cot when applying the medication. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying Zovirax. Avoid getting the cream in the eyes. Take Zovirax exactly as prescribed by your doctor, do not stop using this medication without your doctor`s approval even if you feel better. Your symptoms may start to go away, even though the infection is not completely treated. Lesions caused by herpes viruses should be kept clean and dry.

Warnings/Precautions
Notify your doctor of your medical history and of any other medicines that you are taking. Zovirax topical is in the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the fetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women, or studies in women and animals are not available. Also it is not known if Zovirax passes into breast milk. Therefore, do not use Zovirax without your doctor`s approval if you are pregnant, likely to become pregnant or breast feeding.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, apply Zovirax as soon as you remember and apply next doses at your regular interval (for example, every 3 hours) until you go to bed. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and carry on your regular dosing schedule. Do not double up the dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are– itching, stinging, burning, or a rash. These side effects are most likely to go away by them selves, however, contact your doctor if you experience these conditions. You should seek medical attention immediately if an allergic reaction is suspected (difficulty breathing, rash, itching, swelling of your lips/ tongue/ face or hives).

Storage
Store this medication at a temperature below 25°C (77°F). Keep away from children and excess heat, light and moisture (not in the bathroom).Do not freeze.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately.

More Information
Zovirax topical shows its best result if the treatment is started during the first 48 hours after appearance of the rash. Patients you are allergic to acyclovir or propylene glycol should not use Zovirax. Follow your doctor`s directions for using Zovirax.
